Reading Vision

At Longford Park Primary Academy our aim is that by the end of their primary education all children are able to read fluently and with confidence. We strive to breakdown barriers so that all children can develop a love for reading that will stay with them for a lifetime, unlocking all other areas of learning.

Our Reading Vision - We are Readers!

Evidence shows that engagement in reading has the biggest impact on children’s success: they can ‘Fly High!

Children are Readers!

Every child is a reader! To celebrate our Flying High Reading, we invite all children to take part in a ‘Reading Treat’. These include making and sharing reading dens, shared reading with other year groups, designing alternative front covers of books, becoming an illustrator for the afternoon and reading breakfasts that children share with their parents.

Adults as Readers!

Adults must be readers! Through daily modelling, adults bring texts to life, demonstrating fluency and expressive intonation while guiding children to infer, question and deepen their understanding of what they read, and of course sharing their favourite books! To support this, teachers across the Trust and RIJS attend RT=RP, exploring latest texts and hearing from the authors themselves. The literature festival is enjoyed by staff and our close links ensures our staff and children get the latest training and book info! Authors showcase our ‘Fly High’ vision and values. Author workshops have included visiting Sharna Jackson, Tilly Matthews and local author, Lois Kingscott.

Our adults and children loved getting into character as part of World Book Day!

Reading Strategy

 Our Reading Strategy

Our reading strategy is carefully planned, building on research- informed decisions and practice.

We teach to the National Curriculum English programmes of study for KS1 and KS2 following our LPPA progression document.

Progression

We are very proud of our book spine, which have been carefully selected and is constantly updated to ensure that texts are chosen for their literary merit. Each class texts provides something a little different, whether that be a historical fiction, representing character growth, differing viewpoints, classical authors or those which just make you laugh out loud!

Extra information for Parents

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader (AR) is an online system used for children once they are able to test on STAR – usually within Year 2. This is a system to promote reading for pleasure. On STAR children receive a ZPD which indicates what level of book they should be reading (a band e.g. 2.4 – 3.5). Library books are labelled with these levels so that children can be guided to the texts to choose. Once they have read the text children complete an online quiz. They can use the book to help them with this. These quizzes are not tests – children should use the book to support them with these. Reports on quizzes and any other STAR or Early Literacy Test can be viewed by logging into Renaissance Learning.
